Jewelry

Sometimes my outfit really has no relation to what I’m about to write, but I put it there anyway..for those people who don’t really care to read about one of my many weird interests. (No hard feelings. Half of the things I ramble about are lost on ordinary folks. You are not alone.)

Up for discussion tonight are SNUFF BOXES! There’s a whole collection of them at the Met. It also happens to be my 2nd favorite gallery. (the arms and armor is number 1) I just think they’re pretty, and to me that’s a good enough reason to like them.

Case in point: this Faberge snuff box with an H on it. Has anyone seen anything more perfect? Of course if I owned it it wouldn’t contain snuff, because snuff is very un-hanna. I’d most likely utilize it as a container for my vitamins and supplements because my plastic one is really missing the mark and isn’t in keeping with the rest of me. And there’s nothing like a pretty case to induce one to maintain one’s health.

I guess I wouldn’t mind having my face painted on the cover either. If the Russian tzars approved, then why not? It makes for easy identification.

I wonder how the tsars felt when they got a bit fatter and they stared down the constant reminder of what they had once been. Very depressed, I suppose. Ah rich people and their problems.

I think I’ve gotten to the point where diamonds can no longer just be confined to jewelry.

Sprinkle them on anything and everything I say!

SoFA Retail Lab (1)

A lot of people ask me, what exactly do you do? Among a lot of other things (whatever floats my boat!), I have a little hole (haha!) in the mall  — the SoFA Retail Lab. It’s a multi-brand store that houses different SoFA brands :) So do me a favor and hop on over to the SoFA Retail Labat 2/F Archeology Section Power Plant Mall and do a little shopping :)

Here are some of my picks:

Some thoughts floating around Hanna’s mind at this moment:

1) Home is terribly missed.

2) Re-falling in love with the ring I gifted self for successfully turning 23.

Relatively unscathed might I add.

Got this “art deco barrel Egyptian-y looking with rubies and two sapphires on the side” ring from Jul Dizon, designed by the matriarch herself. It had been sitting at their salon for over 10 years. I believe the first time I saw it was back when I was still in grade school and still morbidly obese. Anyway, I left the country, earned a degree, gone back and it was still there waiting to be loved.

Who could blame me for feeling it my responsibility to step up and give it a home?  Add that to my penchant for things that the general public don’t appreciate…and BAM the ring is mine.

Generally speaking, if everyone likes something, I get a bit suspicious.

3. Vogue/Vanity fair, eat your heart out. I’ve found a new guilty pleasure.

Happy weekend! Stay safe and don’t drink too much.

An ugly liver is molto molto un-sexy.

”Without knowledge of jewelry , my dear, a woman is lost.”

‘What’s this?’
-A marquis diamond!
‘A marquis shaped diamond!’

‘This?’
-This is..uh..a topaz!
‘A topaaazz??? Among my jewels? Are you mad? It’s a yellow diamond of the first quality. You’ll have to go a long way to see one like it’

But it doesnt matter who gives them, as long as you never wear anything second-rate.
Wait for the first-class jewels, Gigi. Hold on to your ideals.

Don’t you just love it when you go in search for one thing and end up finding something else which is infinitely more useful/prettier/better?

I’ve been looking for my I.D for what seems like a lifetime. I’ve searched high and low and side to side and back to front! I think it’s still having too much fun playing hide and seek with me. I’ll let her be, she’ll give up one day.

Good news is : although ID is still missing, I’ve managed to find a whole ziplock bag full of jade rings!

I got these from a trip to Hong Kong just before I moved to NY. They were selling them at the Jade Market for pennies so I went ahead and bought one in every color of the rainbow (well, ish). My poor auntie Beth had to practice patience as I spent hours digging into tubs and piles of jade to find the right color, size, blah, etc.

This ziplock discovery couldn’t be more timely.

These mix-and-match stackable rings are the answer to my prayers as I exhaust every effort to be fabulously frugal in response to the challenges of global financial and economical instability. Desperate times call for desperate (and creative) measures and Im of the opinion that dual/triple/multi-purpose jewelry give you the most bang for buck.

…..

RULES FOR MIXING:

THERE ARE NO RULES!!!!

That’s a lie. Read further down on how I match the jade rings to bring out their maximum beauty.

Number 1 is that I always make it a point to add some glittery carbon in the mix since jades aren’t shiny enough. When I want to use the thicker jade, I add these two eternity rings that I courteously stole from mother when she was in NY.

(What is that horrendousness that is my fingernail? I didn’t think it was that bad until I saw this! I will sort them out once I finish writing this.)

Number 2: When I feel like wearing the thinner jade bands I use this gold double layer eternity band I got from my gorgeous jeweller/antique dealer in Edinburgh. Malena, I miss you so much!

(I haven’t even bothered looking for a dealer in NY because it wouldn’t sit well with this whole ‘economising thing’ I’ve committed myself to. Knowing me, I’ll start making friends with him/her, chat over coffee, go for brunch, meet his/her family and before I know it I’m sucked in because I love buying things from people I like. Better to avoid the situation all together.)

DIAMONDS + JADE = infinite possibilities

I’ve even tried adding them on to my pearl earrings that my other auntie gave me after my mom had confiscated my jewels as punishment for doing something naughty. I sank into depression and literally begged to be grounded or physically chastised instead. Those were some very lonely nights without having anything to polish or clean.

To abruptly conclude:

When the going gets tough, buy stackable jade rings! Then go through your mother or grandmother’s drawers and cabinets to see if they have some diamond eternity rings kicking about.

If Hobbes had it right, then war is just another one of those absolutely useless things that is part and parcel of human nature.

”Wars and revolutions and battles are due simply and solely to the body and its desires.”-Some Greek Dude.

That is, people’s natural cravings cloud rational judgement which leads to perpetual chaos and a lack of morality.

Personally, my own pacifist appetite finds universal peace extremely sexy.

But if we must absolutely wage war, let it be with these gold, enamel and diamond singing bird pistols.

Only then will I be able to bear the futility of war!

I’ve always marveled at the fact that exceptionally special people, events, and curios manifest irregular cardiac activities.

Palpitations. Dizziness. Shortness of breath.

Is it heart arrhythmia?

No. It’s a 19th Century 14 karat gold necklace with 6 little Italian blackamoors hanging on it. One of the little men has a compass for a torso (he’s my favorite. I clearly need him in my life to sort my directional issues…otherwise known as ‘inability to get anywhere without getting lost’ syndrome). Another has rose-cut diamonds for a choker. Another had rubies. And yet another had  a carved blood jasper seal as a butt.

The six are reflective of beautiful friendships where uniqueness is not thwarted, but inspired to thrive.

I wore the thing of beauty around the Fred Leighton salon while chatting with Fred’s Angel Libby.

I am currently unable to bring them home to love and cherish. But at least I’ll always have those 10 precious minutes when we were one.

It’s strange. This thing. The feeling of familiarity even if an occurrence has no precedent. It’s unsettling, weird and amazing at the same time.

Dear Libby,

(Repko. In case youre on a hunt for something fabulous and need someone equally fabulous to provide her expert opinion and advice on jewelry)

Thank you for letting me hang out in the shop for 3 hours. I enjoyed discussing everything from the Czech Republic to the silver bracelet you now wear which was once a table napkin holder at your parents’ wedding.

You are awesome.

All my love,

Hanna.

Forever21 tank, Willow skirt, F&H accessories, shoes from China

There’s something about orange that I seem to be obsessed with these days!!!  Nabbed this orange tank from Forever 21 a few days ago where it seemed to be one of the last few pieces. Even if it a size too big, I could resist the pop of neon!

Paired it with my new skirt from Willow Clothing at The Ramp Crossings, love the chiffon belt that goes with it.

I went on a little accessory shopping spree in Folded & Hung. I never realized they had such great finds there!

I’ve recently been looking for the perfect pair of black pumps and I came across it during one of my trips to Rockwell from a brand called Michael Antonio. This pair, I LOVE, with it’s platform heel, faux snakeskin finish and the little peep toe!
